A phone that stops at 80 percent is not automatically broken. Modern iPhones and Google Pixel phones can deliberately pause or cap charging to reduce the time their batteries spend completely full. Heat can also slow or suspend charging. The important question is whether the phone is following a setting, reacting to temperature, or failing to receive stable power.

First check for a charge limit

On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Charging. Apple allows a charge limit from 80% to 100% in 5% steps on supported models. If 80% is selected, stopping near that level is expected behavior. Apple says the phone may occasionally charge to 100% so its battery estimate remains accurate.

On supported Pixel phones, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization. Google documents a “Limit to 80%” option for Pixel 6a and later. Menu names can change with system updates, so use Settings search if the path is different.

Optimized charging can delay the last 20 percent

A limit and optimized charging are not identical. A fixed limit normally keeps the phone near the chosen ceiling. Optimized charging learns a routine, holds the battery around 80%, then aims to finish closer to the time you usually unplug.

If the lock screen says charging is paused or gives a time when charging will finish, leave the feature enabled unless you genuinely need a full charge sooner. On iPhone, the charging notice may offer a temporary option to charge now. On Pixel, review the charging-optimization setting instead of turning off unrelated battery controls.

Heat may temporarily pause charging

Charging creates heat, and gaming, navigation, video calls, direct sun, a hot car or a thick case can add more. Apple states that software can limit charging above 80% when recommended battery temperatures are exceeded. Google likewise documents automatic battery protection during prolonged charging under high-temperature conditions.

Disconnect the charger, move the phone to a cooler shaded place and let it return to a comfortable temperature. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer. In the Philippines, a parked vehicle or sunny window can become much hotter than the surrounding air, so cool the device naturally before testing again.

Rule out the charger, cable and outlet

  1. Inspect the cable and connector for fraying, bent pins, corrosion or looseness.
  2. Remove visible lint from the port only with the device maker’s safe-cleaning guidance; never insert metal.
  3. Try a known-good, compatible charger and cable from a reputable source.
  4. Try another wall outlet instead of a questionable extension or overloaded power strip.
  5. Restart the phone and test while it is cool and idle.

A weak or damaged accessory may charge slowly enough that the percentage appears stuck while the phone is still consuming power. Our guide to checking whether a USB-C cable supports fast charging explains why connector shape alone does not prove power capability.

Watch what happens after 80 percent

Note the exact percentage, charging icon and message. If it repeatedly stops at precisely 80% while cool, a setting is the leading explanation. If it stops at changing levels, connects and disconnects, or only works at one cable angle, inspect the power path more closely.

Battery percentage can also become inaccurate as a battery ages. A sudden drop from 20% to zero is a different symptom; see our battery percentage drop guide for those checks.

Do not use risky calibration tricks

Do not repeatedly drain a lithium-ion battery to zero, heat or cool the phone deliberately, install a “battery repair” app, or disable device protections. Those actions do not restore worn battery chemistry. Avoid chargers that are damaged, counterfeit or advertised with impossible power claims.

If you change a charging limit for a travel day, remember that spending less time at 100% is the reason the protection exists. Restore the preferred setting afterward instead of treating the feature as a fault.

When service is the safer next step

Stop charging and seek the manufacturer’s authorized support if the battery swells, the screen lifts, the phone smells unusual, liquid or corrosion is present, or the device becomes painfully hot. Also arrange diagnosis if multiple known-good accessories fail, the port is physically loose, or charging repeatedly disconnects while the phone is cool.

Back up important data before service, but never share your account password or one-time code with an unsolicited repair contact. Use the support route linked from the phone maker’s official website.
