Short answer: disconnect everything from the hub, connect the hub directly to the computer, and add one device at a time. If it fails only when a drive, display, or charger is added, the likely cause is insufficient power, an incompatible USB-C feature, a weak cable, heat, or one faulty peripheral.
Start with the simplest connection
Shut down or safely eject external drives, then unplug the hub. Inspect the USB-C plug and computer port for dirt, looseness, or damage. Reconnect the empty hub directly to the correct computer port without an extension cable. Test a low-power device such as a mouse before adding storage or video.
If the computer has another USB-C port, test it. Some ports support charging, data, video, or Thunderbolt differently even though the connector looks identical. Check the computer manual and the symbols beside each port.
Check whether the hub has enough power
Portable drives, capture cards, phones, and displays can compete for the power supplied through one port. If the hub accepts a power adapter, use the manufacturer-recommended adapter and connect it before high-power devices. Do not assume that a phone charger supplies the wattage or USB Power Delivery profile required by a laptop and hub.
Microsoft’s USB-C guidance notes that external hubs, underpowered chargers, and too many devices can limit functions. Apple similarly recommends connecting a device directly when macOS reports that USB devices need more power.
Test the cable and video path
A USB-C cable may charge correctly but lack the data rate or video capability needed by the hub. Use the hub’s captive cable or a certified replacement specified by its maker. For a display, confirm that the computer, port, hub, cable, and monitor support the same DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt path.
Lower the monitor refresh rate or resolution temporarily. If the hub becomes stable, the connection may be exceeding its supported video bandwidth. Connect the display directly to the computer for comparison.
Update software without using risky driver sites
Install operating-system, firmware, and optional hardware updates from Windows Update, macOS Software Update, or the hub manufacturer. On Windows, open Device Manager and note any error code instead of deleting random drivers. On a Mac, check System Information to see whether the hub and attached devices appear.
Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities. They can install incorrect or unwanted software. If a corporate laptop blocks a dock or storage device, contact IT rather than bypassing policy.
Rule out heat and physical movement
Hubs can become warm, but repeated disconnects when the case is very hot suggest excessive load, poor ventilation, or a fault. Place the hub on a hard surface, remove covers, and keep it away from direct sunlight. Gently touch the cable near each connector; if normal desk movement breaks the connection, replace the damaged cable or hub.
For a separate charging problem, see the PHWhy guide on checking whether a USB-C cable supports fast charging.
How to verify the fix
Reconnect devices one at a time and use each for several minutes. Copy a non-critical test file to and from storage, play video on the external display, and watch for operating-system notifications. Never test with the only copy of important data. A stable setup should survive normal desk movement and wake from sleep without drives vanishing.
When to stop and get official help
Stop using the hub if it smells burnt, sparks, swells, exposes metal, or becomes painfully hot. Contact the manufacturer when disconnects occur on two compatible computers with the recommended power adapter and cable. Ask the computer maker for support if every hub fails on one port or the port is loose.
Philippines-specific tips
Voltage interruptions and sudden brownouts can corrupt transfers even when the hub is healthy. Use proper surge protection or a suitable UPS for desktop setups, keep backups, and safely eject drives before moving equipment. Buy hubs and chargers from authorised sellers so specifications, warranty, and safety certification can be checked.
