Short answer: connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, update your phone, then enable Wi-Fi Calling for the correct SIM in the cellular or mobile-network settings. The option appears only when both the phone and the carrier line support it. On some Philippine accounts, the carrier may still need to activate VoWiFi before the switch works.
What Wi-Fi Calling actually does
Wi-Fi Calling, also called VoWiFi, routes normal calls through a Wi-Fi connection when indoor mobile reception is weak. You still use the phone’s built-in dialler and your usual mobile number; it is not the same as calling through Messenger, Viber, or WhatsApp. Globe says VoWiFi calls are charged like regular calls, while Smart likewise explains that calls use the subscriber’s active plan or normal rates. Check your own promo or plan before making a long or international call.
This feature is especially useful inside concrete homes, condos, schools, and offices where the mobile signal drops but fibre or home Wi-Fi remains stable. If the phone shows Emergency calls only, first follow the broader mobile-signal checks in this guide; Wi-Fi Calling cannot repair an inactive SIM or a suspended line.
Check the phone, SIM, and carrier line first
- Install the latest stable iOS or Android update available for your model.
- Confirm that the SIM can make a normal call outdoors or in another location.
- If the phone has two SIMs, note which Globe, Smart, TNT, TM, or other line you want to use.
- Search the Settings app for Wi-Fi Calling, VoWiFi, or Calls over Wi-Fi.
- Check the carrier’s current support page because eligible phone models and account types can change.
An imported handset may contain the hardware but still lack the carrier configuration needed for Philippine VoWiFi. Do not install unofficial firmware or edit hidden carrier files to force the feature.
Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on an iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
- If you use Dual SIM, choose the line you want to configure.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling.
- Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- Read and accept any carrier notice. If asked for emergency information, enter accurate details.
Apple says the Control Centre or status area can show the carrier name with Wi-Fi when the feature is active. Menu wording may differ slightly by iOS version.
Turn it on on an Android phone
Android menus vary by brand. A common path is Settings > Network and internet > SIMs > your SIM > Wi-Fi Calling. On many Samsung Galaxy phones, try Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling. You can also open Settings and search for the feature by name. Choose Wi-Fi preferred only if that option is available and your home connection is dependable.
After enabling it, restart the phone once. Look for a handset-with-Wi-Fi icon, VoWiFi label, or a carrier name followed by Wi-Fi. The exact indicator depends on the brand and software.
Fix a missing or inactive Wi-Fi Calling option
- Turn off Airplane mode and keep Location available during activation if the carrier requires it.
- Update the phone, then open the SIM settings again.
- Remove and reinsert a physical SIM only after powering the phone off. For eSIM, do not delete the profile just to troubleshoot.
- Try a private home or office Wi-Fi network instead of a mall login page or captive portal.
- Restart both the phone and router, then test again near the router.
- Ask the carrier to confirm that VoLTE and VoWiFi are provisioned on the line.
A VPN, company firewall, or heavily filtered public network can interfere with the connection. Temporarily testing on a different trusted Wi-Fi network helps separate a phone issue from a router issue.
Verify that calls are really using Wi-Fi
Do not rely only on the switch being enabled. Go to an indoor spot with weak cellular reception but strong Wi-Fi, wait for the Wi-Fi Calling indicator, and place a short local test call. Ask the other person whether the audio is clear, then receive a call as well. Test SMS only if your carrier says messaging over VoWiFi is supported for your account.
Keep Airplane mode off for the first test. Emergency calls may follow special routing and location rules, so never use a non-emergency number to experiment with emergency services.
Philippines-specific tips and official help
Keep enough load or an active call allocation if your prepaid service requires it; Wi-Fi itself does not automatically make a carrier call free. Use a stable private connection during brownouts or weak-signal periods, and remember that the router also needs power and an active internet service. If the option never appears, provide the carrier with the phone model, software version, SIM type, account type, and the exact menu you checked. Contact the carrier rather than a third-party repair shop when provisioning is the likely cause.
