Short answer: close other camera apps, open the physical privacy shutter, confirm the camera works in your computer’s Camera app, then allow camera access for Teams and select the correct device inside Teams. If Teams on the web fails, the browser also needs permission. A company policy or driver problem may require IT or manufacturer support.
Work out whether Teams or the camera is failing
Quit Zoom, Google Meet, Messenger, browser tabs, virtual-camera tools, and any recording software that may be using the camera. Restart Teams. Then open the built-in Windows Camera app or a trusted camera app on macOS. If you see a normal preview there, the hardware probably works and the issue is more likely within Teams, its permissions, or its selected device.
If the built-in camera app also shows no picture, check the laptop’s camera shutter, side switch, or keyboard privacy key. Some laptops show a crossed-out camera symbol when privacy mode is active. An external webcam should be connected directly to another known-good USB port for testing, without a hub.
Select the correct camera in Teams
Open Teams settings, go to Devices or the video section, and choose the built-in or external physical camera you intend to use. A virtual camera left by streaming software may be selected instead. Microsoft also provides a test-call option for supported Teams accounts; use it before an important meeting if it is available.
On the meeting pre-join screen, verify the preview rather than relying only on the camera button. If video works in Teams but looks blurry or freezes, that is usually a performance, lighting, or connection problem—not a detection problem.
Allow camera permission in Windows or macOS
In Windows 11, open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. Turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera, and the setting that allows desktop apps when applicable. Teams installed outside the Microsoft Store may depend on the desktop-app permission rather than an individual toggle.
On a Mac, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera, and enable access for Microsoft Teams. Quit and reopen Teams after changing permission. If the control is locked, greyed out, or managed, ask the organisation’s administrator rather than trying to bypass it.
Check browser permission for Teams on the web
A browser has its own camera permission in addition to the operating system setting. Open the site-permission control next to the Teams web address, allow Camera, select the intended camera in browser settings, refresh the page, and rejoin. Do not grant camera access to unrelated sites.
If the desktop app is urgent to troubleshoot, try the official Teams web version as a comparison. If one version works, you have a temporary way to join while you update or repair the other.
Update Teams, the system, and camera driver
Install the current Teams update and supported Windows or macOS updates, then restart the computer. In Windows Device Manager, check whether the camera appears and whether it is disabled or has an error. Use Windows Update or the laptop or webcam manufacturer’s official support page for drivers; avoid third-party driver-download sites.
If Windows cannot detect the camera at all, follow the hardware checks in our guide to a laptop webcam that is not detected. Reinstalling Teams will not repair a missing hardware device.
How to verify the repair
- Confirm a stable preview in the built-in camera app.
- Confirm the correct camera appears in Teams settings.
- Make a Teams test call or join a private test meeting.
- Turn video off and on once.
- Close and reopen Teams and confirm it still remembers the device.
Also check the microphone separately. A working camera does not prove that Teams has microphone permission.
Philippines troubleshooting tip
On prepaid mobile data or a phone hotspot, a weak connection may produce frozen or low-quality video, but it normally should not make the camera disappear from the device list. Test the camera preview before blaming Globe, Smart, DITO, PLDT, or another connection. During a brownout, a USB webcam or hub may lose power; reconnect it only after the computer and power source are stable.
When to contact official support
Contact your school or company IT team when camera controls are managed, Teams says a policy blocks video, or the device works in personal apps but not the managed account. Contact Microsoft if Teams alone continues to fail after permissions and updates. Contact the computer or webcam manufacturer if the camera is absent from the operating system, disconnects repeatedly, or shows a hardware error.
