ChatGPT memory can make repeated conversations more useful, but it should not become a place where old preferences or sensitive details sit unnoticed. Open Settings > Personalization > Memory to review the controls available to your account. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers, but the settings page is the better place to make lasting changes.
Start with a memory review
Open the official ChatGPT website or app, make sure you are in the intended personal or work account, then go to Settings and find Memory under Personalization. The exact labels can vary as OpenAI rolls out its newer memory experience. Some accounts show a memory summary; others show saved memories and a separate control for referencing chat history.
Read the entries as if you were checking a profile someone else wrote about you. Look for details that are outdated, too broad, or unexpectedly sensitive. A preference such as “use concise answers” may be useful. A former address, an old medical detail, a client name, or a family member’s personal information may not belong there.
Correct or remove an inaccurate memory
You can ask ChatGPT to forget or correct a detail, or use the controls beside the memory entry. After making a change, return to the memory page and confirm that it was updated. Do not test deletion by sending the same private fact again; use a harmless preference if you want to check how memory behaves.
OpenAI explains that its newer memory summary is a high-level synthesis and may not list every factor used for personalization. If a response still refers to a removed detail, inspect the original chat, uploaded files, custom instructions, and connected apps. The information may still exist in one of those sources.
Know the difference between memory and chat history
Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove a saved memory that came from it. Similarly, deleting a memory does not erase the original words from an old conversation. If the goal is full removal, delete the memory and every relevant chat or file, then disconnect any app that still contains the information.
Turning memory off changes future personalization, but it is not the same as clearing existing content. Read the confirmation text before selecting any bulk-delete option. If you need a copy of your account information first, use the official export control and protect the downloaded archive.
Use Temporary Chat for a clean conversation
Temporary Chat is useful when you do not want a conversation to use or create memory. Check that the conversation is marked temporary before entering anything. It is still better to remove names, account numbers, school records, medical documents, passwords, and business secrets that are unnecessary for the task.
For a broader privacy check, follow our guide to turning off chat history and reviewing ChatGPT controls. History, model-improvement preferences, memory, and account deletion are separate settings.
How to verify the change
- Reload the Memory settings page and confirm the entry or toggle has changed.
- Check both web and mobile after the account has had time to sync.
- Start a new ordinary chat and ask a harmless question related to the removed preference.
- Review custom instructions and project settings if the old instruction still appears.
If a managed work or school account behaves differently, the workspace owner may control memory availability or retention. Ask the administrator before uploading organisational information.
Philippines privacy tips
Avoid saving Philippine government ID numbers, bank or e-wallet details, one-time passwords, exact home addresses, patient data, student lists, or customer records as AI memory. Families sharing a phone or computer should use separate accounts and sign out after each session. A browser profile, downloaded export, screenshot, or copied response can remain on the device even after a memory is removed.
When to contact official support
Contact OpenAI Support if a memory cannot be removed, the control will not save, or a deleted detail continues to shape new chats after you have checked its source chats and settings. Provide the device, app version, time, and a redacted screenshot. Never send a password, recovery code, or unredacted account export to someone claiming to be support.
