Android can still report full storage after you delete files because those items may be waiting in a trash folder, another app may hold a second copy, or app data and offline downloads may be using most of the device. Storage totals can also take time to recalculate. Check the category first instead of installing a “cleaner” that requests broad file access.
Restart and check the Storage screen
Restart the phone normally, then open Settings, Storage. Google distinguishes storage, where files and apps are kept, from memory, which runs active programs. Closing apps does not create permanent storage space.
Open the largest categories and note whether Apps, Photos, Videos, Audio, Downloads, System or Other is responsible. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Compare the available-space number before and after each safe change.
Empty trash only after reviewing it
Files by Google keeps items in Trash for 30 days before automatic deletion. Open Files by Google, Menu, Trash and review the contents. Permanently deleting Trash frees device space but removes the recovery option, so restore anything you still need first.
Gallery apps and manufacturer file managers may have separate recycle bins. Emptying one app’s trash does not empty every other app’s trash.
Understand Google Photos deletion
Google Photos can store cloud and device copies. Deleting inside Google Photos with backup enabled can remove the item from synced devices and the cloud library, while “Free up space” is designed to remove backed-up device copies. Confirm that backup is complete before using either option.
Google’s current help says deleted Photos items remain in trash for 30 days. Do not empty that trash merely to change local device storage unless you understand which copies are affected. Our iPhone storage guide explains a similar symptom on a different platform.
Remove offline media inside the app
Streaming apps often keep downloaded music, video, podcasts or maps in private app storage. Remove downloads through the same app that created them. Deleting a visible shortcut or playlist does not always remove the downloaded media.
Check YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, podcast apps, messaging apps and offline maps. Keep content needed for travel until a backup connection is available.
Review app size and cache
Open Settings, Apps and sort by size where supported. Google says Clear cache removes temporary data, while Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Use Clear cache first for an unusually large app.
Before clearing storage, confirm the account and sync status. Games, authenticators, messaging apps and editors can hold local-only data. Clearing storage may sign you out or erase downloads and unsynced progress.
Check Downloads and duplicate files
Open the Files app and sort Downloads by size. Old installers, exported videos, received documents and duplicate photos can accumulate. Preview files before deletion and avoid removing folders whose purpose you do not understand.
Files by Google can suggest junk or duplicate files. Read every selection before confirming; a duplicate filename does not always mean the contents are disposable.
Archive or uninstall unused apps
Uninstall apps you no longer need from Settings or Google Play. On supported devices, Android app archiving can remove an app’s software while retaining its icon and personal data for later restoration. Availability depends on Android version and the app store.
Do not uninstall a security, work-profile or device-management app from a managed phone without approval. Make sure account recovery details are current before removing an authenticator or banking app.
Allow storage totals to refresh
After deleting large files, wait a few minutes and restart once. If the total remains wrong, update Android and the system file manager through official channels. Avoid hidden-menu commands and PC cleaners that promise to rewrite Android storage.
If “System” or “Other” grows abnormally after updates, contact the phone maker with screenshots and the model, Android version and storage breakdown. Back up before any factory reset.
