A camera indicator that stays on after a video call normally means an app, browser tab, Windows Hello component or camera utility still has the camera open. Microsoft says a hardware camera light turns on when the camera is active; devices without a light show a Windows notification when the camera starts or stops. Treat an unexplained light seriously, but first identify the ordinary software cause.

Close the app that last used the camera

Leave the meeting or recording, then close the app completely rather than only minimising its window. Check the taskbar and system tray for Teams, Zoom, Discord, OBS, a browser or the Windows Camera app. End an active call before forcing the app to quit so recordings and messages can finish safely.

If the problem occurs only in Microsoft Teams, our Teams camera checklist explains device selection and permission checks.

Inspect browser tabs and site permissions

A browser tab can continue using the camera after you switch tabs. Look for the browser’s camera indicator, close the call or recording page and then close the tab. Open the browser’s site permissions from its normal settings and remove camera access from sites that no longer need it.

Do not install an extension that claims to reveal “camera hackers.” Unknown extensions can read browsing data and create a new privacy risk. Use the browser’s built-in permission controls.

Review Windows camera privacy settings

Open Settings, Privacy & security, Camera. Windows lets you control camera access at the device level and for Microsoft Store apps. Microsoft notes that desktop apps are handled as a group and may not appear as individual entries.

Review the recent activity shown by Windows where available, but remember that the exact display varies by Windows version. Disable access for an app only if you recognise it and do not need its camera feature.

Consider Windows Hello and camera utilities

Windows Hello can use an infrared or depth camera for sign-in. Microsoft lists Windows Hello as an exception that may access the camera for authentication even when ordinary camera access is off. Manufacturer presence-detection, framing and background-effect utilities can also activate camera hardware.

Lock the PC and sign back in once, then review the laptop maker’s official camera or presence settings. Do not remove biometric sign-in or enterprise security software on a managed computer without the administrator’s approval.

Test with the Windows Camera app

Open the built-in Camera app and confirm that the preview works, then close it. If the light goes off normally, the hardware indicator is responding and another app probably kept a session open. If the light stays on after Camera closes, continue with a restart.

Covering the camera can protect privacy temporarily, but do not place a thick sliding cover where it can damage a laptop screen. A cover does not disable the microphone.

Restart the computer normally

Save work and choose Restart. This closes camera sessions and reloads the driver. If the light appears before sign-in and then turns off, Windows Hello or a manufacturer feature may be responsible. If it stays on throughout startup, check the PC maker’s support information.

Install normal Windows updates and camera-driver updates offered through Windows Update or the manufacturer. Avoid generic driver-download websites.

Scan with built-in security tools

If the light turns on without a known app, run a Windows Security scan and review recently installed apps and browser extensions. Remove software you do not recognise through Windows Settings. Do not pay a caller or pop-up that claims to have camera footage.

Change important passwords from a trusted device only if there is other evidence of account compromise. The indicator alone does not prove someone accessed your account.

When to disconnect or seek service

For an external webcam, unplug it when not needed if your workflow permits. For a built-in camera, use the physical privacy shutter or the manufacturer’s hardware switch where provided. On a managed work or school PC, contact IT with the time, active apps and screenshots of permission history.

Seek manufacturer service if the light stays on even in firmware screens, after a clean restart with no apps open, or when the camera is not detected correctly. Do not open the laptop solely to disconnect the camera unless you are qualified.
